First, it is a more economical product than a traditional litter (or non clumping litter); it will last longer (several weeks rather than just one) and you only have to add small quantities when needed. Second, a premium quality clumping litter is less dusty; it is then ideal if you or/and your cat are dust-sensitive.
Traditional litters are usually more commodities than luxury. They are often inexpensive when purchasing but you have to change it completely every week, clean the box and fill with new litter. And they are also usually more dusty. You only have to remove faeces on a daily basis, since urine is being absorbed by the clay grains. A cat is an extremely clean animal by nature so it is usually pretty easy to teach it to go to its litter box; show it only once or twice and you already have a trained and clean kitten. However, accidents can and do happen.
In that case, avoid punishments, which won’t show your cat what to do and will often increase the level of stress, which could aggravate the problem. You also shouldn’t put your cat in the litter box after he or she no longer needs to go; your cat won’t understand what you are trying to say, and if you do this too often, it could create an aversion to the litter box. Simply ensure the litter box is easily accessible and/or place additional ones throughout your home. If the problem persists, speak to a behavioural consultant.
Quickly clean any “accidents” and make sure there are no odours left to prevent further mistakes.
It is also highly recommended to use a hygienic and absorbent litter such as Classic or OdourLock from Intersand as a safer alternative to clumping litters. Although a clay litter is safe, a young kitten will tend to play with it, sticking some into its nose and swallowing some. Clumping clay might block its nose, preventing it from breathing. Fortunately, this tendency to play with its litter should disappear soon.
You can use this type of litter for your cat’s whole life or just the first eight months, while it is still very young.
First, it depends on the type of litter (clumping, non clumping); read the manufacturer’s recommendations carefully. Whether you have to clean every week or every month, a thorough cleanup is a must!
Litter boxes are made of plastic. Strong odours tend to appear when urine gets in contact with plastic (bottom or sides of the box). To prevent that, first follow the manufacturer’s instructions as to the quantity of litter to pour and keep in the box. A regular clean up with water and a mild soap is also highly recommended. You can use a little bit of bleach; too much however could irritate your cat’s nose and eyes.
